Event Description
In recent years, Latin America and the Caribbean have witnessed unprecedented growth in the scale of human mobility, both within countries and across international borders. Reflecting the global interest in improving the understanding of these evolving demographic dynamics, the United Nations Statistical Commission adopted at its 56th session (March 2025) the new Recommendations on International Migration and Temporary Mobility Statistics. Alongside the international recommendations previously developed by the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS), these provide National Statistical Offices with a comprehensive statistical framework for measuring forced displacement and migration within official statistics.
As part of the 2024–2025 biennium of the Statistical Conference of the Americas, a Working Group was established to prepare guidelines for the harmonized production of statistics on forced displacement and migration. The aim is to consolidate international recommendations, regional experiences, and methodological guidance to support National Statistical Offices in implementing these standards.
This webinar will provide an overview of the guidelines, followed by two national presentations on related data production experiences, as well as a reflection on the relevance of the guidelines for future statistical production. The session will conclude with an open discussion, allowing participants to share comments on the draft document previously circulated, as well as national perspectives on gaps and challenges in the production of migration and displacement statistics, and suggestions to strengthen data development on these populations in the region.
