UNFPA Webinar on Leveraging Population and Household Census

EGRISS co-organized a webinar on ‘Leveraging Population and Housing Censuses for Data Collection on Forcibly Displaced Populations’ with UNFPA on 31 October 2023. The session focused on national censuses as a central tool for statistical inclusion of refugees, IDPs and stateless persons.

The presentations were delivered by UNHCR, the Statistical Committee of Republic of Armenia, Mali’s National Institute of Statistics, UNFPA and the EGRISS’ Secretariat for over 85 participants from National Statistical Offices and other partners. In addition to the general census advantages, the comparability with host communities and refugee population estimations were underlined.

Topics covered included key challenges collecting this data, increased regional cooperation, UNCHR’s support to countries, international guidance available form IRRS and IRIS, and showcased Armenia and Mali’s concrete experiences including forced displacement  during 2022-2023. The country perspectives showcased successful data collection in changing and challenging security contexts, by making use of TICs, combining data sources and coordinating with stakeholders throughout the process.
