UNHCR’s annual report provides demographic information and global trends associated with forced displacement and statelessness as of 2019. In particular, the report provides statistics on refugees, people in refugee-like situation, asylum seekers, Venezuelans displaced abroad, internally displaced persons (IDPs), people in an IDP-like situation, returned refugees, returned IDPs, stateless persons and other persons of concern who do not necessarily fall directly into any of these groups above but to whom UNHCR has extended its protection.
In its 2019 edition, the Global Trends highlights the establishment of the EGRISS to address some of the challenges associated with the collection, compilation and dissemination of statistics on these vulnerable populations. Furthermore, the report specifies the scope of the refugee and refugee-related populations based on the definitions provided by the International Recommendations on Refugee Statistics (IRRS).
