Event Description

The Arab region faces significant challenges in strengthening statistical systems due to ongoing conflicts. Displacement, institutional disruption, and resource constraints have weakened the capacity of many national statistical offices to produce timely, reliable data — even as that data becomes more urgently needed to guide humanitarian response, recovery planning, and sustainable development.

To address these challenges, ESCWA (the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) will organize a regional workshop in Amman, Jordan, from 28 to 30 July 2026, bringing together heads of National Statistical Offices and senior statistical officials from Arab conflict-affected countries. Discussions will focus on:

  • Strengthening national statistical systems under conflict and post-conflict conditions
  • Modernizing official statistics and statistical infrastructure
  • Improving data governance frameworks
  • Leveraging innovative data sources and digital technologies to fill data gaps and support evidence-based recovery

The workshop aims to foster peer learning and the exchange of good practices among countries navigating similar constraints, helping participants identify practical approaches suited to fragile and resource-limited contexts.
